  • Fortnight For Freedom: Defending Religious Liberty

Bishop Joseph P. McFadden has announced that the Diocese of Harrisburg will take part and be fully supportive of The "Fortnight for Freedom." This is a 14-day period of prayer, education and action in support of religious freedom, from June 21-July 4 that was called for by the Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. It was instituted because of concerns over threats to religious freedom, both at home and abroad.

In a letter sent to all priests Bishop McFadden said, "Without exaggeration, I tell you that we are engaged in one of the most important challenges of our lifetime. Every priest and deacon, every consecrated man and woman, every member of the laity needs to understand fully that the loss of this struggle is the loss of our personal and God-given right to practice our Christian faith in this country."

The Bishop stressed that this is not a political effort but one that is motivated by faith. He called the faithful to take action in addition to prayer and fasting. He asked them to contact their elected officials and inform them that as believers it is vital that we are able to practice our faith in every dimension of our lives.

Culminating on Independence Day, this special period of prayer, study, catechesis, and public action will emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. Special events that support this great national campaign of teaching and witness for religious liberty have been scheduled.

  • A Novena for the Pope

The Knights of Columbus have started a novena for Pope Benedict, beginning today, Divine Mercy Sunday, and lasting until the fifth anniversary of his pontificate, April 19. You can pray it here with Bishop William Lori, Supreme chaplain of the KOC.

    Prayer for Pope Benedict XVI

Lord, source of eternal life and truth, give to your shepherd, Benedict, a spirit of courage and right judgment, a spirit of knowledge and love. By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care, may he, as successor to the Apostle Peter and Vicar of Christ, build your Church into a sacrament of unity, love and peace for all the world. Amen.

V/ Let us pray for Benedict, the pope.
R/ May the Lord preserve him, give him a long life,
make him blessed upon the earth,
and not hand him over to the power of his enemies.
V/ May your hand be upon your holy servant.
R/ And upon your son, whom you have anointed.

Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory Be...

And don't forget to read Bishop Lori's statement on the controversy here.

    UPDATE 3/14/2010:

Launching a massive 11th-hour effort to keep abortion funding out of the health care legislation originating in the Senate that will presented to the House this week for a vote, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has provided a bulletin insert for distribution in parishes throughout the nation.

The insert urges the faithful to send the following message to members of the House of Representatives:

"I am pleased that the House health care bill maintains the longstanding policy against federal funding of abortion. On the other hand, the provisions on abortion funding in the current un-amended Senate health care bill are seriously deficient and unacceptable. I urge you to work to uphold essential provisions against abortion funding, to include full conscience protection and to ensure that health care is accessible and affordable for all. I urge you to oppose any bill unless and until these criteria are met."

Likewise, the faithful are urged to send the following message to members of the Senate:

"I am deeply disappointed that the current un-amended Senate health care bill fails to maintain the longstanding policy against federal funding of abortion and does not include adequate protection for conscience. I urge you to support essential provisions against abortion funding, similar to those in the House bill. Include full conscience protection and ensure that health care is accessible and affordable for all. I urge you to oppose any bill unless and until these criteria are met."

NOTE: Click the "TAKE ACTION" image at the bottom of this news item to automatically email your representatives in Congress with the messages listed above. See below.
